someone told me that amatuer MMA is different from amatuer boxing, wrestling ect..he said that amatuer MMA fighters are less serious than pros, he said that amatuers only want to go in the ring to throw punches and knock someones head off..is this true or is amatuer mma fighters serious about their amatuer career..and is amatuer fighters significantly less skilled than pros?

I think you will find that in any combat sport, there will always be the amateur that goes in that just wants to absolutely go slugger and nuts. But I do beleive that the generalisation is not true. Amateur MMA fighters are, I find, usually very dedicated and well trained. Take Kimbo Slice for example, he wasn’t trained in any formal sort of fighting until he got into the MMA scene - as an amateur fighter he got Grade A training from one of the best.
Ofcourse amateur fighters are going to be alot less skilled than the seasoned pros, but thats as expected. The amateur MMA fighters that aren’t serious about their career usually get beat first round, and don’t get accepted into competitions again.
Hope that helps.

HELL NO ! ! ! I’m an Amatuer Kickboxer I fight like its my last fight every time, i think in my mind i’m going to die, this guy is trying to Kill me and i am NOT letting that happen, as much as i want to turn pro I know that i have to prove my self in the Amatuer Ring FIRST and then turn Pro when i’m ready…If you don’t take being Amatuer in the Hart you will never be a true fighter if you try to turn pro. I know a bounch of Amatuer Fighter that could turn Pro and be Champs so…..I don’t know what your buddys say’in. I think he doesn’t know himself hahhaha

im sure there are guys in boxing who just want to “give it a go” who make a living other ways but its just something they want to do in their life, I guess to say you fought in a cage is something that alot of guys want to do

i think its a personal thing. Fighters will go into the sport with different objectives. Personally, i’m not in it to make it my life. I compete in some amatuer cards here and there in both mma and muay thai. i’d love to fight atleast once pro in both. I go in there with a set gameplan and work proper technique. I also train as if i were fighting a 25 minute fight in the UFC for my amatuer fights. Some fighters compete in the amatuer circuit to get a feeling for the sport before they dive into the deeper waters of the pro divisions. Their goal may be to compete in a few shows and then get out or their goal may be to go full time with it.
Then you have the guys that want to go in just to fight. If a guy trains at a respectable gym and then competes in an amatuer card and just fights to fight (some kind of machismo thing) they should get repremanded like crazy from their instructor/coach. If they don’t they aren’t training at a good gym. Alot of them are the same people that go to a UFC event, get drunk, and because they think they can do it…pick a fight in the parking lot. People like this fizzle out rather fast because wild guys tend to lose alot and they will start to get sick of it. Its alot harder than it looks.

You have no idea how hard it is to train for in any art well enough to get in the ring.
Even beginner sparing is painful. people that are actually good enough and train enough to step foot in the ring are VERY serious.
I have friends that compete in amatur MMA and it’s no BS, very brutal and very painful. And these guys are GOOD.
Oh and your line about ‘only want to knock someone head off’ is dead serious - that one way to win the match.

some are yes the next city north form me as amateurs shows like once or twice a month and it mostly guys form the locla army base who watched UFC and figured if chuck liddell and randy couture can do it so can I
Alot of amateurs are goign to turn pro its always better to start amateur get feel for the sport and well get you butt kicking out of the way before it on your pro record
